There are various carpet cleaning methods known. However, one of the most effective ways, steam cleaning, still not being recognized as one of those methods.
There is a misconception with carpet cleaning methods, that we will try to clarify and steer you in the right direction when searching for a carpet cleaning service.
As a consumer, you need to be informed.
I’ve seen many popular carpet cleaning companies in Houston, TX refer to hot water extraction as steam cleaning, like they’re the same thing. Let me tell you right now, it’s not the same.
I believe, the confusion happens because steam cleaning is not a method that has been around for a really long time in comparison to hot water extraction, shampoo method, or even dry cleaning. In fact, steam cleaning is the latest of all these.
Hot water extraction is definitely an “old school” method of carpet cleaning. It has been around for about 50 years, but just because it’s been around a long time doesn’t mean it’s the best.
Steam cleaning is also the most difficult method to be achieved, not to mention the costliest.
Machines that can reach steam temperatures have very powerful motors and complicated parts, which translates into high maintenance and costly manufacturing and assembly.
It’s simply easier to build machines that don’t require it which also means inferior cleaning results.
Difference between Steam Cleaning and Hot Water Extraction
By the name, you can already tell the state of water when cleaning carpet, but what is really the difference between hot water and steam in terms of cleaning?
The process of hot water extraction cleaning and steam cleaning is very similar, which leads to more confusion.
Cleaning machines heat the water to a certain temperature; then water and a cleaning solution is then injected into carpet with the use of a carpet wand, then the soiled water is extracted back into the truck.
Note, a powerful motor and vacuum are essential to the process.
While hot water extraction cleaning cannot reach higher than 210 degrees, steam cleaning reaches as high as 250 to 300 degrees, as mentioned, further complex equipment is necessary to achieve steam temperatures.
Another key difference to note is that with steam cleaning on carpet there is no need for detergents (or shampoos). Pure steam can release all kind of dirt on carpet fibers.
On the other hand, hot water extraction requires an additional cleaning solution, otherwise, hot water will not be able to remove stains on carpet by itself.
What is the best choice for my carpet? Steam or Hot Water
One of the major disadvantages of hot water extraction is the use of detergents. Detergents are very damaging to carpet and can leave much residue behind on the carpet pile and between the fibers. The same way detergent residue on clothing can affect the fabric, the same can be said about carpeting.
Steam cleaning truly is the better way to clean carpet.
It is the most sanitary and most effective with soil removal and waste removal, such as, urine, vomit, feces and blood, not for nothing, steam cleaning is often described as “deep cleaning”.
Steam cleaning is widely becoming the most popular carpet cleaning method, since people are getting more involved in the environment. The current concern is now, what is the best care for my carpet and my health?
People are questioning the use of detergents and chemicals in their carpeting. Steam Cleaning is the equivalent of eco-friendly and/or green carpet cleaning.
